Goodbye All
I'd like to say goodbye to all the EDM310 students. I hope to have classes with some of you soon! I'd like to give a special thanks and goodbye to Mr. Tashbin and Dr. Strange for all their patience.
Final Blog Post
Honest Reflection
1. First I'd like to say that yes we did many things in this class. Overall I'm glad that I had to take this course because sadly I was super TECHNOLOGICALLY ILLITERATE and would have probably having to be taught by my students. I am happy to say that after taking this course I'm not as behind as I was when I started. I'm more up to speed with technology and most of all I see the importance of technology. My favorite of all the assignments were the Comments4Kids because we got to interact with children. I think mostly all the assignments that we were assigned to are useful and will be used in my class. I plan to have a class blog like some of the classes we visited on Comments4Kids. I thought that itunesU and podcasting is useful because of them using audio as a learning tool.
2. I wish that we had learned to make movies.
3. I feel that everything that I learned from this course is useful and I plan to use everything that I learned as an educational tool. I'd like to be known as the teacher who made a difference.
4. I wouldn't necessarily use the word excite. I did learn from it though.
5. Sadly, I found most of the things in class to be intellectually challenging mainly because the most I did online was facebook and googled things occasionally. That's why I'm glad that I took this course I actually did learn a lot, maybe I only scrapped the surface, but it was a great start.
6. Yes, I was bored when we had to meet in class. I guess because on most days everything could have been done at home. This class could have been a total online course.
7. As I mentioned already, I would make it a total online course.
8. I would say that at the moment I am technologically literate some because I still have a lot to learn. I've basically had a crash course that I as a future educator needed. I think this class should be taken for all majors.
9. I plan to continue blogging, expand my PLN, and visit Dr. Strange's blog from time to time to find out whats new and improved. I also plan to continue to gain knowledge concerning technology because I need much more. My literacy in technology has only just begun.

Comments4Teachers Weeks 13 & 14
Week 13
I think that web based portfolio's are useful and can be effective. Your ideas are great. That sort of what this class is like now. We had to create a blog and our homework was weekly blog post, it's a lot of work but It helps us to make sure that our work is done properly because it's viewable by the whole world.

I agree with you completely and quite guilty of using the term myself. Mostly not having time to learn something is just an excuse for everyone not to do something. You made an excellent point, we all certainly have the same amount of time to get things done and what we choose to do with our time is up to us, so we should use this time wisely especially for those of us who strive to become educators.

My PLN has grown some. I am now friends with more classmates on facebook and I follow more people on Blogger.com. I still need to and would like to expand my personal learning network but for now I feel that for someone who just learned about all this that it's definitely started to grow.

PLN Midterm Post
My personal learning network consist of Facebook where I'm friends with Dr. Juarez. I follow some classmates blogs, Ingrid Welborn and Chelsea Steele. I follow Dr. Paige Baggett's blog. Dr. Juarez post on facebook a lot of movies from youtube about diversity which is her passion. Dr. Baggett blogs about art which is her passion as well. From both these teachers I've learned a lot about how I should run my classroom and gave me some ideas on some ways and things to teach. Both facebook and Blogspot are two great ways to add to the teachers curriculum even outside the classroom. By follow my classmates blogs I'm able to get another point of view other than my own.
Week 15 Homework
PLE
This student is so smart that she can create this movie and has such an extensive PLE. Her organizational skills are amazing. I had no idea what a PLE was until I took this course and I think that it's great that we can learn from the internet just browsing looking at things that we may not feel is educational. Having fun while learning. My PLE includes classmates and teachers.
Two Questions that can change your life.
Wow, this is an eye opener. What is my sentence? Was I better today than I was yesterday? These two questions are amazing questions and gets you thinking at least they did for me. At this point my sentence would all include future tense phrases. Being better daily would be me being better at school, being a better Aunt, and a better server. I want to have a great sentence and I want to be better every day.

Skype
My first experience with Skype was in class when we talked with Matthew Needleman creator of "Mr. Winkle Wakes" through Skype. I thought it was just amazing. Years ago in movies you would see people talking through the computer or having a conversation while seeing the actually person, Example:Back to the future 2. Now that is a reality we can talk to people from other places in the world cheaper than you can pick up the phone and call long distance, it's wonderful. We live in a world where anything is possible through technology and I'm looking forward to seeing what is next.
Interview with a teacher.
When talking to Mrs. Weaver a local teacher from Lott Middle School in Citronelle, Alabama about Technology we found that it is imperative. I began the interview by simple discussing some of her opinions on the topic and we later talked about some issues that have came up with all the technology, pros and cons.
Orso:What is your opinion on technology in schools?
Weaver:I feel that it is vital.
Orso:How do you mean?
Weaver:Well with technology being a part of everyday life we have to address it. It's a part of everything that we do and in almost every job, so we have to prepare our students for whatever necessary.
Orso:I agree. So then it's safe to say that you are for teachers being technology literate?
Weaver:Absolutely. I feel they have to be just to keep up with the students.
Orso:Do you feel that there may be a negative spin on technology in the classrooms?
Weaver:The only thing that I would say is bad is a couple of months ago there was a fight here on campus and some students videoed the incident and posted it on youtube. I think that doing that is unacceptable and should be punishable.
Orso: I can see how that can be an issue. Is there any suggestions that you think is necessary to share?
Weaver:Only that we have to incorporate lessons that involve technology into our lessons. The students need to be up to date with technology, so we have to stay up to date. Also try and minimize situations if possible where something ends up on youtube.

Week 14 Homework
The topic that I chose was Comments4Kids. I enjoyed these assignments the most because it involved children. We viewed blog post made by little kids from all over. I thought this was a great assignment mainly because it involved the very reason why we are in school, students. It also gave us the opportunity to see how other schools or teachers created lessons to go on these blogs. I found that with these assignments the students got caught up in their work and they seemed happy about doing them. I'm sure they were excited to see when people left them comments. Classroom blogs will definitely be something that I do with my class. What about you?

Week 13 Homework
Dr. Seuss-The Zax
This video has a big message in a little amount of time. I think the message is clear and to the point. Educators shouldn't ever stay still in one spot for any length of time. Change is necessary. If teachers stay stuck in a rut they quickly fall into survival mode, they will never love their job, and the ones who will suffer the most will be the students who have to be in this Zax's class.
PS 22 Video
This video was extremely touching, that's why it received such great responses. I think that posting students work online is an encouragement in itself. I know from my own blog I try and make sure everything is correct. When students know that the world have access to their work it should make them more careful for their work to be accurate.
We've been assigned several times over the semester, the works of students that have been posted on the internet. All the students work has been amazing but here are some examples of the students work. Kaia's Blog is a blog that Kaia's dad created and is maintaining. On this blog Kaia's dad post things about her, he made a photo essay of pictures that Kaia took while they were on a adventure together. The picture were awesome, they were of how all things can be beautiful. Another assignment we had was Comments4Kids and that's allowed us to be able to observe some of the students work.
In week 9 my Comments4Kids assignment was to go to Mrs. Yollis' classroom blog and to comment on the 13th post in February. It was awesome, the class had made a movie about polygon's so the title of course is The Polygon Movie! Everyone should visit this site.
In week 8 my Comments4Kids assignment was to comment on a 7th grader named Yazmin. Yazmin wrote this poem that was extremely insightful. The poem is titled "The child who witnessed slavery". This poem also heart warming, it reminds you that you always have someone watching.

I had to comment on Point England's 4th grade class from room 10. My student wrote a great blog called "Spiky all right" I wrote I love all your detail. I can tell that you are a passionate person. Keep that trait and you will go far in life. You seem like such a smart student, I hope that I can teach someone like you when I start teaching.

Week 12 Homework
Dear Kaia
I think that Kaia is a very bright young lady. I think that her father is making a very smart decision when including Kaia in his use of technology. It seems that Kaia's dad is a very involved parent as well as a great educator and uses technology often. Mr. Raisdana doesn't treat Kaia like she's to young to understand or comprehend. Mr. Chamberlain used Kaia's blog in his class which I think was a spectacular idea. I think that he was demonstrating to his class that they don't have to be intimidated by technology because look at Kaia, she has a blog and can't even read yet. I'm sure it helped his class because Mr. Chamberlain's class made a voice thread for Kaia. I think that Mr. Chamberlain used his imagination in a way that every educator should and that Kaia and her dad are awesome individuals. Kaia's photo essay was outstanding!
Singing Hearts
It's amazing how a proud parents showing off his daughter springs into a learning experience for others. I think that this just shows how useful technology really is. How often is it that American students can be taught about other countries by teachers from other countries on a regular school day, no longer is that impossible. I appreciate the ways that these teachers collaborated and created together such a great experience for these students that they will never forget and will always take with them.

Week 10 Homework
An Open Letter to Educators: Morgan Bayda
The Dan Brown video was good. It speaks truth. It is something that at one point or another we've all felt as students, how is this class beneficial to me. Dan Brown was just able to make a valid argument for it and had enough courage to post it on youtube. There have been classes where I felt that it was a waste of time but at the same time there have been classes that where very beneficial and that I learned a lot by going. I am a visual learner, If it's a lecture I need to be there. If were watching a movie, I need to watch it. If it's hand on, I need to have a hand in it. I agree with his argument and find that there are basis for his idea. Although technology seems to be making its debut, it still something that I personally need to have a hands on type of instruction for. I'm excited to be a part of the future of education and I am saying that I am not afraid of change and willing to embrace it as well.

ALEX
The Alabama Learning Exchange is a great site for educators. The website offers different options to choose from the course of study to different websites. I think that ALEX is very useful. It even has a link for Technology education. It offers personal workspace, professional learning, and it has a podcast treasury. This site is helpful especially for a first year teacher.
As a new educator I can find this site useful for me. It can help me with lots of subject. I appreciate the section it has on lesson plans. I know that I will definitely be using the site my first and maybe all my years teaching.
ACCESS
ACCESS is a great site as well, it offers additional education for a student. Their mission is to provide equitable, quality learning for all students. Their goal is to improve student achievement. The students are able to achieve all this from the comfort of their own home. This is very helpful to a student.
What I like best about this site is that it offers remediation for the high school graduation exam. This is a great feature since so many students have problem passing the entire test and just don't have enough time in a school day to study. It also has a tech support if there are any problems. This site is awesome for Alabama's high school students.

Week 8 Homework
Randy Pausch's Last Lecture: Achieving your childhood dreams
This lecture was inspiring and enthusiastic as well as hilarious . I really can't see how he was able to have the strength to present this lecture with such courage. I really loved how he got down and done a few push ups to confirm how well he felt. After listening to this lecture I googled, Randy Pausch and I found out that there is now a book of his last lecture.
Achieving your childhood dreams is a mouth full. Most childhood dreams consist of what seems to be the impossible. Randy Pausch's childhood dreams seems to be impossible. Hearing his dreams come true makes these impossible dreams a closer to becoming a reality. He seemed to be such a confident and smart guy. Achieving his childhood dreams had to have been an awesome experience in itself because his dreams where not small dreams. His dreams ranged from winning stuffed animals to being in zero gravity, wow. Yes, he actually achieved most of these goals. The ones he didn't he learned awesome life lessons from like he said he never made it to the NFL but football brought him where he is today. I think it's awesome that most of his dreams tied together like him writing an article for encyclopedia on virtual reality. His allegory on the brick wall was motivating in so many ways and just with those words. It makes you want to run through the wall.
I took from this lecture that his life has been full of adventure. Randy Pausch achieved a lot in his short life. He seemed to be an amazing guy and I'm sure anyone who knew him was fortunate. I know he had to have been a great educator and I like his methods of the master's degree. The plan they set up was very fair. Most people do learn better hands on than reading it from a book. To be able to help kids learn with fun. The program Alice is a great approach. He's right kids would much rather have fun than learn. Learning while they play, it's great in a manipulative sort of way.
Lessons learned is to have fun, never loose the child like wonder, help others, have loyalty, never give up, get feedback, don't bail, be prepared, be good at something and don't complain just work harder. This lecture is worth so much. It's sad, it's funny and most of all it's rewarding for anyone who watches it. The headfakes are awesome.

His dreams ranged from winning stuffed animals to being in zero gravity, wow. Yes, he actually achieved most of these goals. The ones he didn't he learned awesome life lessons from like he said he never made it to the NFL but football brought him where he is today. I think it's awesome that most of his dreams tied together like him writing an article for encyclopedia on virtual reality. His allegory on the brick wall was motivating in so many ways and just with those words. It makes you want to run through the wall.
I took from this lecture that his life has been full of adventure. Randy Pausch achieved a lot in his short life. He seemed to be an amazing guy and I'm sure anyone who knew him was fortunate. I know he had to have been a great educator and I like his methods of the master's degree. The plan they set up was very fair. Most people do learn better hands on than reading it from a book. To be able to help kids learn with fun. The program Alice is a great approach. He's right kids would much rather have fun than learn. Learning while they play, it's great in a manipulative sort of way.
Lessons learned is to have fun, never loose the child like wonder, help others, have loyalty, never give up, get feedback, don't bail, be prepared, be good at something and don't complain just work harder. This lecture is worth so much. It's sad, it's funny and most of all it's rewarding for anyone who watches it. The headfakes are awesome.

Wow, this app gives real meaning to the one man band idea. I don't have an iPhone but the apps sure does make it tempting to getting one. I think the iPhone is just another wonderful tool out there for the convenience of man and not just for the apps. It is great for a student as well as a teacher.

Week 7 Homework
Dr. Richard E. Miller "This is how we dream part 1 & 2"
Dr. Miller makes the use of the technology seem so simple. Honestly, no I'm not prepared to write using multimedia but I'm am enthused about learning how to use the technology. I believe that my students will be able to do this because kids seem to be more technologically advanced. This is probably because technology is more advanced than it was when I was a kid.
I agree with using the web and technology as a new form of teaching. I think that in this new world we live in, we need to be open minded and have a dream to advance. As Dr. Miller suggested we should drive ideas to become a better society. We should dream of a future that is full of hope. We as educators need to dream of a more advanced way of teaching our students and to become technologically literate.
To know all the ways that we can use multimedia is amazing. I hope to learn everything possible with this technology. I think that the listening/watching method for someone like me is much more effective than the reading/writing method.
Wendy Drexler: The Networked Student
While embarking upon my own PLN, I realize that there is a lot to learn and a lot that I was clueless about. This video is an eye opener and it really gets me to thinking that while I'm learning this information there are students already out there with there own PLN and many students learning at the same time as me. This really puts an urgency and an awareness to the importance of my education.
"Why does the networked student even need a teacher?" is a very good question. The video answers the question nicely but in order for a teacher to be able to teach a student how to build their network and take advantage of opportunities, the teacher must first have a network and take advantage of the opportunities his/herself.
I plan to become that teacher. The teacher who takes advantage of learning opportunities and applies them to my classroom. I am achieving the necessaries to be prepared for the networked student.
Dr. Micheal Wesch: Toward a New Future of Whatever
Are we really amusing ourselves to death? I would agree. I enjoyed this video, Dr. Wesch's concept is definitely accurate. I really loved his idea on working toward a new future for the word whatever. I think his study was outstanding. But aren't we all a little narcissistic? We live in an age where even the most modest of us feel a little sense of self importance sometimes, whether we show it or not. Maybe that is what drives us to amusement or to post videos on YouTube, to feel a sense of self worth. In the future as a student and an educator I plan to put this idea to work and use the whatever it takes by whatever means necessary method.

Week 6 Homework
Dr. Alice Christie
I thought Dr. Christie's site to be very helpful, informative, and inspiring. I think what I took the most from was her Last Lecture. I thought the lecture was heart felt and motivational. I learned a lot from her experiences. From this lecture I'll take great advice. She was remembering and quoting what it was that she had learned from very important people in her life and I learned from her experiences not to take anything for granted that we can learn a great deal from others if we take the time to.
After reading this lecture, I plan to take things from the people in my life and learn as much as I can from them. As a student I learn from my professors. As an employee I learn from my colleagues I learn how to do my job correctly and from my family I learn love. I plan to be a life long learner and because of this I'm excited to become an educator.

I learned about a site from another students blog that I follow,it was a wonderful site and I'm glad that I visited her blog. The site is http://www.apple.com/education/itunes-u/. There was all this helpful information for students and also for teachers. As a student, this is another way to learn. It provides course materials for colleges from all over the world. iTunesU is just another tool or another door to the life long education that we all seek to obtain. We hold the key in our hands and we should definitely take advantage. It's our key and our door all we have to do is put the key in and unlock the door to a whole new way of becoming learners.
For teachers, I'm sure once you get passed the fear of learning to use the technology, iTunesU is a helpful tool designed for your benefit. This site is something I would definitely use as a teacher. It would take away a lot of stress for the teacher as well as the student if there where anything that was ever missed this site could be the link. The educator can and should use this technology for his/her advantage.

The findings were beneficial they ranged from convenience to student engagement and interest. With most everything there are pros and cons. The problems ranged from difficulties in obtaining licenses to lack of knowledge of iPod functionality. I personally think that it can be beneficial. We have iTunesU so we should take advantage in every way we can.
I think that it's an awesome resource and technology should be generated into every classroom in every way possible. I found a site that the title read Transforming Teaching Through Technology. http://t4.jordan.k12.ut.us/t4/content/view/212/37/ was an excellent site. The site is packed with links to other sites and is very useful. I think education is headed in the right direction and technology is just another great tool to help us achieve the goal of excellence.

In week four, I was assigned to comment on Room227's class blog. I found that it was very informative. I commented on the post titled Shrimptastic. It was a lesson about Brine Shrimp. I learned that Brine Shrimp are not Shrimp but they are are crustaceans and they start out the size of the period at the end of this sentence. These kids seemed very excited about their experiment.
In week five, I was assigned to comment on a post made by a 5th grade twin girl from Avoca West School in Illinois. Yesol wrote about a school visit from the author Ruth Spiro. Before I could comment I had to google her just to see who she was. Yesol talked about how she was from a family of bakers and how before the visit from Mrs. Spiro that she felt like an outcast. Now she knows how to make a simple bread and she doesn't feel like an outcast anymore.

Wikipedia
Before this assignment, I was not familiar with NPR (National Public Radio). Now I'm more up to speed on NPR.
Wikipedia is a resource that I've used quite a bit in the past. I've always trusted this source. I was never aware that the facts on the site may or may not be truthful. Thanks to Mr. Virgil Griffith for creating the Wikipedia Scanner. Maybe this will help with some of falsehood that may be on Wikipedia. Although I feel that Wikipedia is awesome resource for general information, I will no longer take the information that I obtain from Wikipedia to be 100% facts without researching other sources.
I think that Wikipedia can still be used a source but not the only one. We shouldn't ever just use one source for any reason. We just know now to be cautious when using the information from Wikipedia and to know that some important facts may not still be there.
What I've learned this year.
I feel inspired and ready to teach after reading this blog. It's so true and all about the students. Mr. McClung is so helpful with his ideals about his first year teaching and will most likely be some of the same issues we will face our first year in the classroom. I plan to take his ideas and make them useful in my classroom. If we learn from other people's experiences it should help us with our experiences.
My favorite parts was when he said that we should be constant learners and not to be afraid of technology. He said to jump in head first. That's what most of us are doing now with EDM 310. I'm so grateful for this opportunity because without it I would have been a technological illiterate teacher who never used technology in my classroom. Now I see the importance and am looking forward to the future as an effective educator.

More Podcasts
All the websites were informative but my favorite was Eagle Nest Radio & Class Blog from the 3rd graders. I always find it amazing when children are technologically literate, even when it puts me to shame. These children are extremely intelligent and it seems that they are having a blast. Being technological literate places no limits on these students therefore giving them the confidence that it takes to succeed in life.
While visiting the other sites, I thought each one to be unique in their own way. Each one is educational and very helpful. Judy Scharf's podcast was probably the most instructive on podcasting and will help someone like me when it comes to creating a podcast. After reviewing this information I feel more confident and excited about making my own podcast.

Media Literacy in the First Grade.
Media Literacy
I think that Mrs. Cassidy is an awesome teacher and doing a wonderful job. Not only are these kids absolutely adorable but extremely smart as well. I just loved the two in the beginning when the little boy said that he was "media literate" and then at the end she said "oh I am too."
It is shocking and a little intimidating to know that these type of children will one day be in my class, they may be teaching it. I better step it up. We as educators need to make sure that we soak every bit of information that we can. We need to remember that these students are more advanced than we were at their age and it's a good thing. We need to be better teachers than we had, even if we had awesome teachers.
Little Kids...Big Potential
It's great that she won the award on this video but what's greater than the video is the fact that she's able to teach these kids in such an amazing way. I think she needs a great teacher award. I hope to be an effective teacher to the point that I could teach my students to be media literate, no matter their age or grade level.

Podcasts
I have to embarrassingly admit that until this assignment that I had no clue what a podcast was. This is one of the many reasons that I'm thankful for this class. After reviewing the podcasts I learned a lot about how I might want my podcast to be. I found them to be interesting.
SmartBoard Lessons was quite unusual, Ben Hazzard was out of the ordinary. I listened to DimDim.com and in the middle of his podcast he ordered coffee and soup. I thought it was rather funny. He works while ordering. The KidCast, was awesome for children and was by far my favorite. I think it's important that kids have activities to be involved in other than video games and television. If I had kids of my own I would definitely allow them to be involved in this podcast. Connect Learning Episode 90 was almost like a refined debate. It seems that they are in a workshop and are allowed to give input. EdTechtalk was exactly like a radio show except on an educational based level. It was an interview based show. Where Robert Squires was interviewing college professors. MacBreak Weekly was also exactly like a radio show it even had commercials. It's very organized. This week in Photography also had commercials and was also like a radio show and had interviews. It had more than one host and had different segments. From the show it sounds like they had a blast.

Micheal Wesch: A Vision of Students Today
This video is a real eye opener for students. I know it is for me. My experience as a student has been a rather interesting one. I graduated high school in 1999. After high school I went to Faulkner State Community College where I earned my associates in Criminal Justice in 2003. I then went to the University of South Alabama where I found myself in over my head and after three attempted semesters I withdrew. I suppose I was a lot like some of the students in the video, talking several hours a day on the phone, watching 2 or more hours of T.V. and not paying attention in class. I would spend less than 3 hours per week studying. I was taking for granted an opportunity that was once for so many people an impossible dream, a dream that is called education.
Several years had gone by and I found my degree useless and myself with no direction. Looking for some sort of path I was told that McIntosh High School was in need of a Special Education Paraprofessional and that the qualifications was to have earned at least 64 credit hours . Finally my A.A. was good for something. This is where my desire to teach began.
Although the Special needs children captured my heart I felt that Elementary School would be the best choice for me. I returned to school in the Spring of 2009. I'm not saying that my entire world revolves around school but I do put more energy into my education. I now realize that it's necessary. I guess the change of heart is due to maturity and responsibility however I could definitely be spending more time reading and a lot less time watching movies. From my experience as a student the only idea that I could add to the movie is to take into consideration the students age. I feel that it's difficult to tell an 18 year old to make a responsible decision about their future, if they don't already have a goal. For most 18 year old kids their social life is what most important during this time of life.
It's Not About the Technology by Kelly Hines
This blog was educational all in itself. I love how she describes her concepts. Kelly Hines really puts things into perspective with how brilliant she made the truth. I agree completely with her. We as educators do have a responsibility to be constant learners for the children as well as for ourselves. As we've already learned that technology is steadily advancing we should be learning steadily as well.
I agree with this Blog entirely. It's not about the technology as much as it's about the teacher. You can have the best of the best and if it's not being used then what good is it other than just collecting dust. We need to all take heed to Kelly Hines blog and learn something, as she said always be learners.
Fisch:Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?
I think what Mr. Fisch is saying is that no it's not okay for teachers to be technologically illiterate and at the same time be effective and successful teachers. I agree completely with him. He is quite clear about how it is the students who are impacted by the lack of knowledge here. I feel that yes every teacher should have some basic knowledge of technology and to incorporate the use of it in our classes.
As we learned earlier from Kelly Hines that educators should be constant learners, well technology is also something we should be constantly learning about. The teachers should be willing to learn about technology not only for themselves but also for the student. Mr. Fisch writes that it's getting harder to be successful in the 21st century being technologically illiterate. That's not only true for teacher but for most companies. Even the cash registers at fast food restaurants are advancing. Like he said we need to experience this, explore it, and learn it. As educators it's up to us to help our students to become successful and effective citizens, lets not hold them back.

It's astonishing how fast the numbers increase. They all increase faster than one second. It really gives you some sort of an understanding of the rapid growth of technology. If technology grows as rapidly as these people are doing things online then wow. I guess technology would have to grow rapidly to accommodate the fast high speed of all that's going on the internet today.
This video is a real eye opener for students. I know it is for me. My experience as a student has been a rather interesting one. I graduated high school in 1999. After high school I went to Faulkner State Community College where I earned my associates in Criminal Justice in 2003. I then went to the University of South Alabama where I found myself in over my head and after three attempted semesters I withdrew. I suppose I was a lot like some of the students in the video, talking several hours a day on the phone, watching 2 or more hours of T.V. and not paying attention in class. I would spend less than 3 hours per week studying. I was taking for granted an opportunity that was once for so many people an impossible dream, a dream that is called education.
Several years had gone by and I found my degree useless and myself with no direction. Looking for some sort of path I was told that McIntosh High School was in need of a Special Education Paraprofessional and that the qualifications was to have earned at least 64 credit hours . Finally my A.A. was good for something. This is where my desire to teach began.
Although the Special needs children captured my heart I felt that Elementary School would be the best choice for me. I returned to school in the Spring of 2009. I'm not saying that my entire world revolves around school but I do put more energy into my education. I now realize that it's necessary. I guess the change of heart is due to maturity and responsibility however I could definitely be spending more time reading and a lot less time watching movies. From my experience as a student the only idea that I could add to the movie is to take into consideration the students age. I feel that it's difficult to tell an 18 year old to make a responsible decision about their future, if they don't already have a goal. For most 18 year old kids their social life is what most important during this time of life.
It's Not About the Technology by Kelly Hines
This blog was educational all in itself. I love how she describes her concepts. Kelly Hines really puts things into perspective with how brilliant she made the truth. I agree completely with her. We as educators do have a responsibility to be constant learners for the children as well as for ourselves. As we've already learned that technology is steadily advancing we should be learning steadily as well.
I agree with this Blog entirely. It's not about the technology as much as it's about the teacher. You can have the best of the best and if it's not being used then what good is it other than just collecting dust. We need to all take heed to Kelly Hines blog and learn something, as she said always be learners.

Homework--January 17, 2010
Did you know? 3.0
After watching the video, Did you know. My very first response was WOW. I actually watched it more than once just to be able to grasp what I had just watched, pausing the video between the clips to make sure that I read every word and my mouth was still wide open! No I didn't know, I didn't even have a clue. We have all this technology at our fingertips and we never wonder where does it all come from. The amazing part is that almost as soon as we understand the technology something new is already in the making and nothing including time is slowing down. We better catch up!
As a child I was the one in my family who was always figuring out how to use the new electronics or whatever is was that we bought that was technical. I remember thinking, why don't you get it? As an adult I understand in this rapidly growing world that we live in that if we don't continue to learn and stay caught up that it's easy to get behind. I realized this when blue tooth was created, in the beginning I just couldn't understand it. It's not surprising that people would easily fall behind with technology when in 1984 the number of Internet devices were only 1,000 and by 2008 it had already grown to 1,000,000,000. What surprised me most was how technical information doubles every two years and that by the time a technical student reaches their junior year in college the information that they learned as a freshman is already outdated. The world is constantly growing at a alarming speed and it's important that as educators we continue to grow with it. That's what it all means to me.
Mr. Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle Wakes after a hundred years of sleep to find himself overwhelmed by such an advanced world. Since watching both Mr. Winkle wakes and Did you know, I feel like Mr. Winkle a little and I could relate to his feelings sometimes. Mr. Winkle disliked to technological future, however it's necessary and does make life for so many a little less complicated. The medical technology was necessary for many reasons. The main reason is that some of the major illnesses that so many died from a hundred years ago, today can be treated with medicines and in some cases are considered minor and inconvenient setbacks.
The educational viewpoint was sad. Although Mr. Winkle found school familiar and comforting it is rather pathetic that school hadn't changed much in a hundred years. I guess this is sort of like a two edged sword because education is essential but it also shouldn't be intimidating on any level. I feel that it's up to the educator to make sure, regardless the circumstances, that the curriculum is not outdated. In the video Mr. Winkle wakes, there was a computer in the class that was not being used and was described as dusty. This should be unacceptable in any school, we should use what equipment that has been made available to us to ensure that the future of our students will ever be inadequate. In a world that is constantly growing, school and education should always stay up to speed because our future can't afford for education to remain the same.
Sir. Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
I found the talk to be humorously inspiring and so full of truth. Sir Ken
Robinson put some ideas in a whole new light. He made me think of education in a way that I've never thought about it before. It is so true, we are programmed to think about education in a right or wrong manner. we are never taught the importance of creativity as individuals however we are told who the great artists are. As grade level students we are always prepped for college to become something that makes a lot of money, which never allows the student to find themselves as individuals when what they're great at just might be better that what they're programmed into becoming.
I like the way this talk opens up your mind to think outside the box and it's available in 36 different languages to get the point across on a more broad spectrum. Schools should make room for more creativity. It might set the stage for more Gillian Lynne's or Picasso's. I'm not at all disputing the importance of our education system, math, science, language, reading, and history are vital.
I also like how he tells us to face the fear of being wrong. There is a truthfulness just in those words, so many of us are afraid of being wrong so when we are taught that certain curriculum is the right one or the best one that what we tend to go with sense we all have this fear of being wrong. I agree with Sir Ken Robinson on so many levels and I'm glad that I was introduced to this site.
Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
Vicki Davis is an amazing teacher with an amazing concept of teaching. She is so right about her method of teaching, every child is not going to learn the exact same way so it is important to mix things up a little. I like how she allows the students to teach some of the material. Some students learn best from there peers. It's so important as a teacher to be in tune with your class.
Another concept I like is that it's a technical class they are all learning about technology and it seems like no one is being left behind they are all up to speed. I think it is important for schools to teach kids about technology, that's why I was so excited about taking this course because it is so important for us as students and it will continue to be important as we begin our careers as educators. With so much to learn in this rapidly evolving world it's nice to have someone to educate us so that we can one day educate others.
